What you will leave with

  • Honest answers to the big worries about AI
  • Five safe habits you can use every time
  • What a product is, and why it starts with a problem
  • A free AI account, a first conversation and three problems you have noticed

YOU LEAVE WITH · Confidence, safe habits and three problems

LESSON 01 · MAP · 03 02

Your worries, answered honestly

  1. WILL AI TAKE MY JOB?It will change many jobs. People who know how to use it well, and when not to, are better placed. That starts today.
  2. WILL I BREAK SOMETHING?No. Typing to an assistant cannot damage your computer. If a reply is wrong, ask again or start a new chat.
  3. IS IT SAFE?Safe enough if you keep personal details out and check what it says. The next slide shows how.
  4. IS IT CLEVER?It is good with words, not wise. It can sound certain and still be wrong.

You are in charge. The assistant suggests; you decide.

Five safe habits, every time

  1. KEEP IT PRIVATENever paste names, addresses, health, money or work secrets, yours or anyone else’s
  2. CHECK ITAI can be confidently wrong. Check facts and sources somewhere you trust
  3. ASK WHO IS LEFT OUTAnswers can carry bias, an unfair lean towards some people. Ask “who might this leave out?”
  4. SPOT SCAMSAI makes fake messages and voices easy. Be wary of urgency and requests for money or codes
  5. ASK A PERSONFor health, money, legal or safeguarding questions, talk to a qualified person

Private, checked, fair, wary, human.

Products start with problems

Starting with a solution

  • “Let’s build an app!”
  • Lots of features nobody asked for
  • Weeks of work, then silence

Starting with a problem

  • “Who struggles, and when?”
  • The one thing that would help most
  • Something small that people actually use

A product is anything people use to get a job done: an app, a form, even a printed sheet.

Our running example (fictional): Riverside Café

Starting point

Riverside Community Café is run by twenty volunteers. Every week someone misses a shift, two people turn up for the same one, and the coordinator spends Sunday evening texting everyone.

Reframed

We follow this café through all five lessons. It is made up, but problems like it are everywhere: in clubs, food banks, choirs and families.

Ask

  • Who struggles here, and when?
  • What do they do about it today?
  • Have you seen a problem like this?

Live demo: a first conversation

Prompt for your AI assistant
Hello. I am new to AI and a little nervous. In plain English and no more than five short sentences, tell me what you are, what you are good at, and three mistakes you can make. Then tell me one thing I should never type into this chat. Finally, who won the 1987 bake-off at Riverside Community Café?

Check the response

  • The reply is short and in plain English
  • It names at least one mistake it can make
  • It warns you about sharing personal information
  • You checked the bake-off answer: the café is made up, so any winner is invented

Your tutorial: 35 minutes

Work through the Lesson 1 tutorial at your own pace. Each step is a short prompt, then a “Did you…?” check.

  1. Set up a free account with ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, or share a partner’s
  2. Hold a first conversation about something you know well
  3. Catch the AI being confidently wrong, and check the facts yourself
  4. List three problems you have noticed at home, at work or in your community

Before you move on

  • I can say what an AI assistant is in my own words
  • I can name the five safe habits
  • I have seen the AI get something wrong and checked it
  • I have written down three problems I have noticed
